M12 Lenses Enable Compact Vision Systems
M12 lenses are smaller and
lighter than C-mount alternatives, which matters for embedded vision and robotics. The M12x0.5 thread is
standardized in diameter and pitch, so lenses and holders interchange, but retention under vibration
depends on holder height, thread fit, locking torque, the barrel shoulder, and any thread-locking
compound rather than on the standard itself.
Board-level integration benefits from M12's compact threaded-barrel design. With no fixed
flange standard, back focus is set by thread depth, so the sensor can sit as close as the design allows.
Total track length still follows the optical prescription, the back focal length it needs, the barrel, and
the sensor stack, so an adjustable thread does not by itself shorten the optical package. Wide-angle M12
designs achieve extensive field coverage for area monitoring in space-constrained applications.
