Sony Image Sensors (91)

Sony's IMX and ISX sensors span three families you will meet constantly in this list: Pregius and Pregius S global-shutter sensors built for machine vision over Sub-LVDS and SLVS-EC, STARVIS and STARVIS 2 back-illuminated rolling-shutter sensors with strong near-infrared response for low-light and security work, and Exmor R sensors that power embedded camera modules from Raspberry Pi to industrial MIPI CSI-2 designs.

How to Choose a Lens for Your Sensor

Lens selection comes down to three checks. First, coverage: the lens image circle must be at least as large as the sensor's active-area diagonal, or the corners vignette. Our CMOS sensor size and format guide explains how 1/2.8", 2/3", and 1" formats translate to real millimeters. Second, mount: compact M12 board lenses for embedded designs, or C-mount with an adjustable iris for industrial depth-of-field control. Third, field of view: run your working distance and scene size through the field of view calculator, angle of view calculator, or depth of field calculator.

Reading the Spec Table

Optical format
The camera sensor size class in fractional inches, such as 1/2.8" or 1/1.8". It is a naming convention, not a physical dimension. What matters for lens selection is the active-area diagonal in millimeters, which the lens image circle must cover. Our CMOS sensor size guide maps every format to its real dimensions.
Pixel size
The pitch of a single photosite in microns. Larger pixels (3–6 µm) collect more light per pixel for low-light and NIR work; smaller pixels (1–2 µm) pack more resolution into the same optical format and demand higher-resolution optics.
Global vs. rolling shutter
A global shutter exposes every pixel at the same instant, so fast motion stays geometrically true, which is essential for machine vision, barcode reading, and eye tracking. A rolling shutter reads out line by line, which is fine for security and embedded video but skews fast-moving objects.
Max frame rate
The full-resolution frame rate. Many sensors run much faster at reduced resolution or bit depth, and the camera interface often limits the usable rate below the sensor's native maximum.
Interface
How pixels leave the sensor: MIPI CSI-2 dominates embedded designs, Sub-LVDS and SLVS-EC carry high-bandwidth machine-vision streams, and parallel/DVP survives in legacy and low-power parts.
NIR response
Sensitivity beyond visible light (typically 850–940 nm). NIR-enhanced sensors such as Sony STARVIS 2, OmniVision Nyxel, and onsemi Hyperlux LP pair with our IR bandpass and IR-cut filters for active-illumination designs.

Image Sensor and Lens FAQ

What does CMOS mean in an image sensor?

CMOS stands for complementary metal oxide semiconductor, the fabrication process that puts the photodiode array and its readout electronics on one chip. CMOS imagers replaced CCDs in most cameras because they read out faster, draw less power, and integrate analog-to-digital conversion on-chip. Every camera sensor in this list is a CMOS design; the columns that matter for lens selection are the optical format, active-area diagonal, and pixel size.

How do I match a lens to an image sensor?

Match the lens image circle to the sensor's active-area diagonal: a lens made for 1/2.5" covers any smaller format without vignetting. Then pick focal length for your field of view. Every sensor page in this list does both steps for you: it lists Commonlands M12 Lenses and C-Mount Lenses whose image circle covers that exact sensor, with the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal field of view calculated from measured lens distortion.

Should I use an M12 lens or a C-mount lens?

M12 (S-mount) lenses are compact board lenses for sensors up to about 1/1.7", the default for embedded, robotics, and drone cameras. C-mount lenses cover larger formats up to 1", and their adjustable iris ring gives depth-of-field control for factory automation and inspection. Browse the M12 Lens collection, the C-Mount Lens collection, or read what an M12 lens is.

Which of these sensors need a global shutter?

Any application that measures or decodes moving objects: machine vision, barcode and label reading, eye and gaze tracking, drone navigation, and 3D scanning. Global-shutter picks in this list include Sony Pregius/Pregius S (IMX250–IMX547), onsemi AR0135/AR0234, and OmniVision OV9281/OG series. For stationary scenes and security video, rolling-shutter STARVIS-class sensors trade shutter geometry for low-light sensitivity.

Does Commonlands build complete camera modules for these sensors?

Yes. Commonlands designs and builds custom MIPI CSI-2 camera modules that integrate the lens, sensor, and carrier board, with active lens-to-sensor alignment and 100% MTF testing on Trioptics ImageMaster equipment. Talk to an applications engineer to scope a module around any sensor on this page.
