Frequently asked questions

What sensors does the CIL038 no-distortion 4mm M12 lens support?

The CIL038 supports 1/2 inch to 1/2.3 inch sensors up to 5MP at 3μm pixel pitch. Sony IMX577 and IMX477 sensors are good matches, and the 7.8mm designed image circle covers those formats with margin.

How much distortion does the CIL038 have?

The CIL038 has less than 1% TV distortion at the 7.0mm image circle. That is very low for an 85° lens, so many measurement, barcode, and inspection setups can skip software correction.

Why is all-glass construction important on the CIL038?

The all-glass optical stack holds focus more consistently over temperature than plastic-hybrid designs. That matters in industrial environments where thermal cycling can move a cheaper lens out of focus.

Is the CIL038 compatible with the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera?

Yes. The IMX477 in the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera is a 1/2.3 inch format, and the CIL038 covers it. You will need an M12-to-CS adapter or a direct M12 mount board, and you should still check mechanical back focal length before ordering.

Which lens holder works with the CIL038?

The Commonlands CLA024 is one compatible holder, and other mounts work as well. e-con Systems boards can also use a 7-13mm tall mount, and FLIR Blackfly S, Allied Vision Alvium, and iDS uEye LE cameras are mechanically compatible.

Does the CIL038 ship same day from the US?

Yes. Commonlands ships in-stock lenses same day from San Diego for orders placed before 12 PM PST.

The CIL038 is a 3.85mm all-glass M12 lens for 1/2" sensors up to 5MP at 3μm pixel pitch. It gives you an 85° field of view with less than 1% TV distortion at the 7.0mm image circle, which is the combination people usually want and rarely get in a compact wide-angle lens. The eight spherical glass elements sit in an aluminum barrel, so the mechanics feel like industrial hardware instead of consumer camera leftovers.

This lens makes sense when wide coverage matters but heavy software correction does not. The 7.8mm designed image circle and 8.2mm max image circle cover 1/2.3" sensors like the IMX577 and IMX477, so the CIL038 works well in Raspberry Pi HQ Camera builds and industrial systems that need straight geometry.

The fixed F/3.0 aperture gives up some light, and that tradeoff is worth stating plainly. You get more depth of field in return, which helps when everything from 300mm to 1m needs to stay in focus. You can estimate that tradeoff at depth of field calculator

The available mechanical variant is M12A, which uses BBAR coating on the first lens surface and an AL6061 aluminum barrel without ingress protection. Order CIL038-F3.0-M12A650 with 650nm IRC or CIL038-F3.0-M12ANIR for NIR applications. The lens mounts with a Commonlands CLA024 holder and fits FLIR Blackfly S, Allied Vision Alvium, iDS uEye LE, The Imaging Source, and D3 Engineering camera modules.

Orders placed before 12 PM PST ship same day from San Diego. The lens weighs 9.4g. Contact engineering@commonlands.com for .STP files or volume pricing.
