The Commonlands FOV engine computes these horizontal and vertical angles for the active area of each sensor rather than for the full image circle, so they run narrower than the published diagonal on each product page. The 8mm lens just inscribes the IMX546 diagonal, while the other five carry margin.
Which Cameras Use 2/3" 12MP-Class Lenses
Most 2/3" global shutter sensors top out near 8MP, so Commonlands rates this series by pixel pitch rather than by one sensor. The 2.74µm Sony IMX546 and IMX566 at 8.1MP and the 1.85µm IMX226 at 12.4MP are the sensors it was designed around.
Basler ships the IMX546 in the ace 2 a2A2840 line and The Imaging Source in the 33UX546 and 33GX546. For the IMX226, look at the Basler ace acA4024, IDS uEye CP, and The Imaging Source 33UX226, which the 1/1.7" 12MP series also serves.
The older 2/3" 5MP pair, the IMX264 and IMX250, also fits inside the 11mm circle; the 2/3" 5MP series covers those sensors with faster F/1.4 apertures.
For the image-circle rules behind these pairings, read the Commonlands guides to sensor size and lens compatibility and image sensor selection for machine vision.
How to Choose a Focal Length for 2/3" Cameras
Choose by the horizontal field you need on your sensor: 52° with the 8mm lens on the IMX546 down to 9° with the 50mm. Distortion stays at or below 0.1% from 12mm to 50mm, so measurement pipelines can skip software correction on those focal lengths.
The 8mm CIL531 trades that geometry for coverage at -1.9%, which is fine for barcode reading, robot guidance, and conveyor inspection. Stop the iris down for depth of field and let programmable lighting make up the exposure; the depth of field calculator shows the tradeoff.
Working Distance and Minimum Focus on 2/3" 12MP Lenses
Working distance varies by product, typically 100mm to infinity for Commonlands C-mount lenses, and each product page lists the minimum focus distance. The working distance guide explains how the internal cam refocuses these designs and why the minimum object distance is a hard stop.
Several designs here publish distortion at minimum object distance or at 0.5m rather than at infinity, which is where measurement fixtures usually sit, so check MTF and distortion at your standoff. Use the depth of field guide to set the aperture once the camera height is fixed.
What the 12MP Rating Means on a 2/3" Sensor
The 12MP label names the pixel pitch class Commonlands designed and toleranced each lens for, from 2.2µm on the 8mm through 35mm designs to 1.85µm on the 50mm. It is not a measured resolving power, so ask for the MTF curve at your aperture and field height.
On an 8.1MP IMX546 these lenses carry resolution margin. On the 1.85µm IMX226 only the 50mm CIL536 is rated to the sensor pitch; the 2.2µm-class designs still image well but leave some pixels unresolved, so check the MTF curve.
